Why it's vital to review the progress of your business

It's easy to focus only on the day-to-day running of your business. But once you're up and running, it can pay dividends to think about longer-term and more strategic planning.

This is especially true as you take on more staff, create departments within the business, appoint managers or directors and become distanced from the everyday running of the business.

Reviewing your progress will be particularly useful if you feel:

~ Uncertain about how well the business is performing

~ Unsure if you're getting the most out of the business or making the most of market opportunities

~ Your business plan may be out of date, e.g. you haven't updated it since you started trading

~ Your business is moving in a direction different to the one you had planned or moving faster than you anticipated

~ Your business may be becoming unwieldy or unresponsive to market demands

It is also useful if you have decided that your company is ready to move on to another level.

Assess your core activities

A good starting point for your review is to evaluate what you actually do - your core activities, the products that you make, services that you provide and the people that you employ. Ask yourself what makes them successful, are my processes supporting my product? Are my processes supporting my people? Are my people supporting my business? Could they be improved and can we launch new or complementary products or services? So many questions and ,often, so few answers.

Welcome to 3key Consulting's Blog page. This page is designed to offer guidance and direction for those people who have a desire to improve their own businesses or simply want to revitalize their working environment.

My name is Bryn Jones and I have worked in and around Business Management,Operational Organisation and Executive Mentoring for most of my working career. The items that I post will be of a general nature , however they will still offer food for thought when it comes to working more effectively, efficiently and not quite so hard.

A common term I hear when doing business reviews is that "we cant spend the time to review because we are all so busy" , now this may be a legitimate position , but in my experience only about 5% of businesses are actually "busy".

Most times its the employees who are busy simply because the process v's people v's product structure needs some work. That is either the processes are NOT supporting the people or the people are NOT supporting the processes and the product isn't performing as required. Its simple really!

(Just a short note here, the product isn't the thing you sell, its the entire , end to end experience of your client. its goes from the person who answers the phone all the way through your manufacturing, distribution, packaging,reselling,storage,sales,accounts ,support and of course item performance. These days the product you sell is your entire business not just that widget that your salespeople offer in the market.)

So why don't mangers and owners do something about it? Well, have you ever heard the saying " cant see the wood for the trees"?

This is a common situation, it can be very difficult to focus on the key areas of the business when you are actually working in it, That's where an external business review can make such a big difference....................
